Viking Combat and Weaponry

A Discussion with William Short and Reynir Óskarson

Share Vikingology Podcast

It’s summer and Vikingology is taking a bit of a hiatus. C.J. is moving back to France with his family, so we are wishing them well and giving him some time to get settled in. We thought this a good time to revisit some of our earlier episodes over the next couple months in case you haven’t had the pleasure yet. We will be back together and live in September with some very interesting guests, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy our archive. Skál!

In this episode, we had an interesting chat with William Short and Reynir Óskarson of Hurstwic who are experts in the experimental archaeology of Viking combat and weaponry. We talked about their methods for understanding fighting in the Viking Age, the famed Ulfberht sword, how Vikings may have trained and their battle tactics, and the honor-bound cultural ethos that was critical to life as a Viking.

And we were also surprised by what may have been the most common Viking weapon of all. We bet you will be too!

Check out their book Men of Terror: A Comprehensive Analysis of Viking Combat. It’s a very deep dive into all things combat, including strategy and tactics, the viking mindset, and their weaponry.
