However, when you were lamenting the lack of archaeology in North America compared to Scandinavia, I became aware that you were referring solely to the evidence of European presence, without a mention of the Native Americans that had been living there for thousands of years and for which there is a lot of archaeology, including for the Early Medieval Period (Viking Age) predating the arrival of Leif Ericsson.

Actually, when I was making that lament I did say that "unless you are Native American, there is very little deep history in the west of North America." So I absolutely do acknowledge that history exists here for indigenous people. I live in the Pacific Northwest, as does C.J., so that history is all around us, particularly in place names.
